SSS
Social Security System (Philippines)
The SSS is the Philippines' Social Security System. Its mission is to provide meaningful protection to members and their families against the hazards of disability, sickness, maternity, old age, death and other contingencies resulting in loss of income.
Coverage is compulsory for private-sector employees — including kasambahay, or house helpers — for self-employed persons and for Overseas Filipino Workers, sea-based or land-based, who are not over 60 years of age.
Someone who is both an employee and self-employed pays contributions under both, and any excess above the maximum is refunded from the self-employed contributions. The State's stated policy, in Section 2 of Republic Act 11199, is to extend social security protection to Filipino workers, local or overseas.
Contribution rates, benefit amounts and procedures change over time; the SSS publishes the rules in force.
Who it concerns
Private-sector employees, self-employed people and Overseas Filipino Workers aged 60 or under, and their beneficiaries.
